BE PART OF SOMEONE’S NEXT CHAPTER
Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is just showing up
IT’S MORE THAN GIVING YOUR TIME. IT’S ABOUT HUMAN CONNECTION
Reentry is built in moments between people. Someone waiting when you come home. Someone helping you find a resource, prepare for an opportunity, reconnect with family, or simply figure out what comes next. At Names Over Numbers, volunteers help create those moments. Whether you work directly with someone returning home or help build the resources and opportunities waiting for them, your time becomes part of someone’s path forward.
-
Imagine walking back into the world carrying everything you own in one hand or one small bag, unsure where to go, who to call, or what comes next. The thought of standing there alone with not a person in the world is a daunting thought.
Now imagine looking up in that same situation and seeing someone waiting there just for you.
That moment may seem small to the person standing on the other side. But to someone coming home, it can mean they don't have to take that first step alone.
That’s what this work is about. Volunteers can help welcome people home, prepare essential supplies and resources for their return, listen to what they need, and help create meaningful opportunities to reconnect with family and community. Sometimes it’s a backpack. Sometimes it’s information. Sometimes it’s helping a parent find a simple way to remind their child, “I still know you. I still see you.”
We can’t erase someone’s past or promise what their future will look like. But we can make sure that in one of the most uncertain moments of their life, they are seen as a person, treated with dignity, and reminded that they are more than the number they were given.

Coming home is one step. Building a life after incarceration is another.
Imagine being ready to move forward, only to find that the doors you need to walk through keep closing because of your past. A job that won't consider you. A resource you didn't know existed. A program you qualify for but don't know how to find. Sometimes the difference between giving up and taking the next step is simply having someone help you find another way forward.
That's where our volunteers can help. You may research and verify community resources, connect with organizations throughout San Diego County, identify employers and workforce programs willing to provide second-chance opportunities, or help make reliable information easier for people navigating reentry to find and use.
You won't be asked to have all the answers. You'll help us find them. Because when one door closes, our job isn't to tell someone to stop knocking. It's to help them find the next one.
-
No one rebuilds a life alone. Reentry may begin with one person coming home, but what happens next depends in part on the community they return to. The people willing to listen. The organizations willing to help. The employers willing to see potential. And the neighbors willing to see a person before they see a past.
Bringing the community closer means helping build those connections. Volunteers may represent Names Over Numbers at community events, connect with local organizations, help introduce our mission to people throughout San Diego County, or work alongside us to create events of our own that bring people, resources, opportunities, and conversations together.
Every connection we make helps build a community where coming home doesn't have to mean starting over alone. A conversation can change the way someone sees reentry. A new relationship can lead to an opportunity. And simply bringing people together can help break down the barriers that keep people apart.
Because reentry doesn't happen somewhere else, to someone else. It happens right here in our community, to people who are part of it. When our community gets involved, we all become part of what comes next.

There is something deeply human about knowing someone thought about you.
Not because you asked. Not because they owed you anything. But simply because someone knew you were going through something and cared enough to make sure you had what you needed.
That is the kind of support we want to create at Names Over Numbers.
Volunteers help turn that care into action. You might organize a drive for essential items, build relationships with businesses and community supporters, gather supplies, prepare Welcome Home Kits, or help strengthen the resources available to people rebuilding their lives after incarceration.
Sometimes what reaches someone will seem incredibly ordinary. A backpack. Clean clothes. Hygiene products. Transportation assistance. Information that leads to the right resource.
But ordinary things don't always feel ordinary when you're the person who needs them.
You may never meet the person who receives what you helped provide. You may never hear their story or see what happens next.
But somewhere, someone will hold something that is there because you cared enough to help put it there.
And maybe that's the most important part.
The resource matters. But the person it reaches matters more.
FIND WHERE YOU FIT
You don't need to know exactly how you want to help before you reach out.
